Treating Anxiety & Depression

In my experience, people are generally depressed and/or anxious for one of three main reasons:

Trauma

Going through physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse can leave scars in a person in the form of irrational beliefs such as “I am not lovable” I can’t trust anyone” or “I am not safe”. These beliefs form a filter through which people interpret events and information about themselves and others in a way that leads to anxiety and depression. For example, if I don’t have any irrational beliefs and I lose my job, I might be worried about money however I will just focus on getting another job. However if I have irrational trauma-based beliefs such as “I am not worthy” or “I am a failure” I will start beating myself up with thoughts like “I am a loser”, “No one will hire me” and get very anxious and depressed. Or if I am in a relationship/friendship and my partner/friend gets angry with me and I have beliefs like “I am not lovable” I will either react in a defensive hostile manner or shut down and withdraw neither of which will result in a healthy resolution of the conflict. The inability to have healthy relationships/friendships can also lead to anxiety and depression.

Being dissatisfied with life

If I am in an unhappy relationship, or I don’t like where I live, or I don’t like my job or I am lonely due to lack of friendships or I don’t take the time for fun my life can feel overwhelming and/or empty which in turn can lead to anxiety and depression.

Genetics

It is possible to inherit a tendency to depression and anxiety due to genetic factors.

I have a number of approaches that can be used to treat anxiety and depression including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Hypnosis, Mindfulness and Exposure Therapy. I also do Life coaching to help my clients to create a satisfying life. Especially when genetics are involved it might be helpful to try psychiatric medication as well and I can refer people to prescribers of psychiatric medication when appropriate.

How Do I Know if Depression & Anxiety Therapy is Right for Me?

At Inner Journey Counseling I start out by getting to know you, understanding what is important to you, discovering what your values and strengths are, and identifying what is preventing you from living a life in accordance with those values. Once we have identified these blocks, I use a variety of methods that work together to remove those blocks so that you can express your true self.

The particular approach taken will depend on the individual(s) being treated.
